About San José Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO)
San José Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) is an international airport located in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. It’s located about 12 miles (20 km) west of downtown San José. It is named after Costa Rica’s national hero, Juan Santamaría, a courageous drummer boy who died in 1856 defending his country against forces led by US-American filibuster William Walker. It is equipped with one runway and two passenger terminal. It first opened in May 2, 1958. It’s the hub for Volaris Costa Rica, Nature Air, Sansa Airlines and a focus city for Avianca, Copa Airlines.
